A second-year major in broadcast communications in 1970 at Kent State University, Howard Ruffner had spent the previous four years in the Air Force where he learned photography. Contrary to the myth that veterans were spit upon, he was well-liked and respected and had been appointed editor of the 1971 yearbook. His photographs of the shootings have been widely reprinted and include the cover of the May 15, 1970 Life magazine. A freelance photographer, today he lives in Phoenix, Arizona and is married and a stepfather to three children. He enjoys working on the computer, particularly in the areas of new software and digital photography.
